Game Changer

The Game Changer initiative aims to improve access to out-of-school opportunities for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities by increasing the confidence of both families and youth organisations in inclusive provision.

John Lyon’s Charity identified a lack of inclusive out-of-school activities for young people with learning and access needs, alongside limited capacity and expertise within mainstream youth and play settings. Families often struggle to find suitable opportunities and to feel confident that provision will meet their child’s needs, meaning many young people miss out on activities that support confidence, wellbeing and personal development.

Through surveys, family consultation and discussions with youth organisations, the Charity gathered evidence on the barriers families and providers face. The findings showed that while the Youth Sector is increasingly committed to inclusion, current provision is often focused on young people with mild to moderate needs, leaving gaps for those requiring more intensive support.

The Game Changer report sets out short- and longer-term considerations for organisations seeking to deliver more inclusive programmes. Looking ahead, the Charity will use its role as a funder, convener and advocate to support stronger partnerships, improved communication with families, workforce development and greater investment in inclusive out-of-school provision.
